Marc Ecko Funds An App To Put The Twin Towers Back In The NYC Skyline
110 Stories is an iPhone app concept by Brian August that augments reality to place the Twin Tower back into the NYC skyling view.
The app, currently in the process of being funded through crowd-sourcing on Kickstarter, a Web site where entrepreneurs and artists raise money from the public, would consist of three steps: orient, augment, comment. The app will guide users to the appropriate direction to view the phantom towers, then superimpose a ghost image of the towers upon the real one, creating a conglomerate image. Users will then be able to include their personal story regarding the moment on multiple social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as well as the app's own site.
The idea has begun to capture a lot of interest, both for its emotional resonance and for its technical sophistication. Mr. August contributed $7,000 of his own money to get started, and has since raised more than $25,000. Marc Ecko, the fashion designer, contributed $10,000. Earlier this week, Mr. August presented the idea to the New York Tech Meetup, which draws hundreds of people from the local technology industry. And on Friday, Google Creative Labs said it had agreed to offer technical advice and publicity.
Brian August's vision does not stop with the app, Phase Two of the project would be an installationc onsisting of identical benches placed in prime viewing spots all over the city as a physical manifestation of the app, to recreate the majesty of the Twin Towers.
